Nalchik

Capital, economic and cultural centre of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, in the northern Caucasian region of the southwestern Russian Federation; population (1996 est) 237,000. Situated at an altitude of 550 m/1,804 ft in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, the city has a variety of industries, a university (founded in 1957), and is a health resort and tourist centre. It was founded in 1818 as a Russian fortress.

The area around Nalchik contains several archaeological sites of interest, canyons and waterfalls.
