Namath, Joe (1943– )

US football player. In 1965 he signed with the New York Jets of the newly established American Football League and in 1969 led the team to a historic upset victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. In 1967 he became the first quarter to pass for more than 4,000 yards in a single season. After leaving the Jets in 1977, he briefly played with the Los Angeles Rams.

Born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Namath played quarterback for the University of Alabama, leading his team to victory in the 1965 Orange Bowl. Knee injuries forced his retirement as a player in 1978.
