Namboodiripad, Elamkulam Manakkal Sankaran (EMS) (1909–1998)

Indian politician; leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) 1978–92. In 1934 he helped found the Congress Socialist Party (CSP). When it became the Communist Party of India in 1940 he remained a member of its politburo until it split in 1964. Namboodiripad headed the first Communist government ever elected in Asia when he was elected chief minister of Kerala in 1957. He became chief minister a second time in 1967–69, leading a seven-party coalition headed by the CPM. In his later years he was a columnist for the Communist Party of India-Marxist weekly Deshabhimani.
