Nam Dinh

Capital of Nam Ha province, northern Vietnam, 70 km/43 mi southeast of Hanoi; population (2000 est) 186,400. It lies in the Red River delta on a canal between the Coi and Dai rivers; industries also include silk spinning and weaving, jute-milling, sawmilling and distilling. It was badly damaged by bombing during the Vietnam War.

Nam Dinh is an important centre of Annamese culture, and is the site of an old citadel and examination centre, at which the triennial examinations organized by the imperial court were held until the early 20th century.
