Namibe

Fishing port in southern Angola, 400 km/249 mi south of Lobito; population (2007 est) 83,900. The town is a railway terminus; a line was built in 1955 with the intention of connecting to the South African system, but it only reaches into the interior of Angola. Namibe exported iron ore from Cassinga, 350 km/217 mi inland, but this ceased in 1975. Production of ore at Cassinga was slowly regenerating in the late 1990s.
