Nampa

City in Canyon County, southwestern Idaho, 29 km/18 mi west of Boise; population (2000) 51,900. Since 1915, Nampa has hosted the annual Snake River Stampede, one of the West's largest rodeos.

Founded in 1886, Nampa was originally an agricultural hamlet, and became a railway town in the 1890s. It remains a processing and distribution centre, serving a farming region that produces fruit, vegetables, dairy goods, livestock, animal feed, vegetable seeds, and cereals. Industries include frozen food manufacture and meat processing. It is the site of Nazarene College (founded 1913). The Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge on Lake Lowell lies 5 km/3 mi to the southwest.
