Nampo

City on the west coast of North Korea, 40 km/25 mi southwest of Pyongan (it acts as the port for the capital); population (1998 est) 447,500. Industries include a major shipyard and the manufacture of electrodes and glass. The opening of the port to foreign trade in 1897 stimulated its modern growth.
