Nanino, Giovanni Maria (c. 1545–1607)

Italian tenor and composer. In 1580 he opened a music school with the assistance of his brother, Giovanni Bernadino Nanino, and Palestrina. He also supplied music to the Sistine Chapel, Rome, and became maestro di cappella there in 1604.

After learning music as a choirboy at Vallerano, he went to Rome as a pupil of Rinaldo del Mel, became a singer at the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, maestro di cappella at the church of San Luigi de' Francesi in 1575, singer in the Papal Chapel in 1577, and maestro di cappella at Santa Maria Maggiore in 1579.
