joule

SI unit of work and energy (such as potential energy, kinetic energy, or electrical energy).

It is defined as the work done (energy transferred) by a force of one newton acting over one metre and equal to 107 ergs. It can also be expressed as the work done in one second by a current of one ampere at a potential difference of one volt. One watt is equal to one joule per second.

The joule replaces the calorie (one calorie equals 4.2 joules).
