Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.04 sec.

Nanteuil, Robert (1623–1678)

French graphic artist and engraver. ‘Designer and Engraver’ to Louis XIV 1658, he excelled at portrait drawings and pastels, and ranks as the greatest of French portrait engravers.

Working from life and modelling features with much delicacy of linear shading, he produced portraits of, among others, the minister Jules Mazarin and Anne of Austria.

Nanteuil was born in Reims. He settled in Paris, where he was trained and influenced in his art by Philippe de Champaigne.
