Nonthaburi

City in the central area of southern Thailand on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, 20 km/12 mi north of Bangkok; population (2001 est) 291,300. As it has expanded the city has effectively become a suburb of Bangkok, but its economy remains based on rice, fruit and vegetable cultivation

Nonthaburi is the home to Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (1978). The nearby Chalerm Phra Kiat Temple was built on the west bank of the Chao Phraya during the reign of Rama III in the 19th century, and is a tourist attraction.
