Napa

City and administrative headquarters of Napa County, north-central California, USA; population (1992) 63,300. It is situated on the Napa River, 58 km/38 mi northeast of San Francisco on San Pablo Bay. It is a major trading centre for wine produced in the surrounding Napa Valley vineyards; other products include fruit, clothing, steel pipe, and leather goods. The city has also served as a shipping point for cattle, lumber, and minerals. Tourism is important to the regional economy. Napa State Hospital and Napa Valley College (1940) are both in the city.

The Napa Valley, extending 48 km/30 mi northwest from the city, is the best-known US winemaking district, with over 50 wineries in such communities as Calistoga and St Helena. It, and the parallel Sonoma Valley, to the west, are also major tourist attractions.
