Great Gable

Great Gable

Mountain in Cumbria, England; height 1,000 m/3,281 ft. It has several difficult rock climbs. The most popular route to the top is from Sty Head at the head of Borrowdale Valley.

Since 1923 Great Gable has been the site of a war memorial dedicated to mountaineers of the Fell and Rock Climbing Club.

Apparently the sport really took off in 1886 when W P Haskett Smith became the first man to climb Napes Needle in the Lake District.
It features a photograph of the Barker brothers perched on top of Napes Needle on Great Gable in the Lake District thanks to their "adherence to certain rules of safety".
