Naracoorte

Town in South Australia, 385 km/239 mi southeast of Adelaide; population (1996) 4,674. Naracoorte is a large commercial centre for an agricultural region, with sheep-grazing and the manufacture of dairy products. The Naracoorte Caves, 11 km/7 mi from the town, are deep limestone caverns which include stalactite and stalagmite formations; the Victoria Fossil Cave contains unique fossilized specimens of ice-age animals.

Stationmaster Arnold Smith (Military Medal, recommended for the DCM), a Naracoorte man in the 4th Australian Railway Operating Company is found wearing what appears to be a civilian piece of band insignia, hand-cut from sheet metal in the form of an uncrowned lute.
Though locally called "ranges" the highest and most easterly of these, the East and West Naracoorte Ranges are only 50 to 60 metres above the plains to the west and 30 to 40 metres above the plains to the east.
