Narragansett Bay

Atlantic inlet of Rhode Island State, USA. Running inland for 45 km/28 mi, the bay is up to 20 km/12 mi wide. Its numerous islands include Aquidneck or Rhode Island, which is linked to the mainland by bridges to the east, north, and west. Providence, the state capital, lies at the head of the bay. The bay is named after the Narragansett, an American Indian Algonquian people who originally inhabited its western shores.

The island of Aquidneck, in the mouth of the inlet, contains Newport, site of the US Naval War College (1885), the America's Cup yachting races, a jazz festival, the Tennis Hall of Fame, and summer mansions of the wealthy (many open as museums).
