Either of two plants: a Himalayan plant belonging to the valerian family whose underground stems produce a perfume used in Eastern aromatic oils; or a North American plant of the ginseng family, with fragrant roots. (Himalayan Nardostachys jatamansi, family Valerianaceae; North American Aralia racemosa, family Araliaceae.)
