Nares, James

Nares, James (1715–1783)

English organist and composer. He studied with Gates, Croft, and Pepusch as a chorister at the Chapel Royal in London. He became deputy organist at St George's Chapel, Windsor and in 1734 was appointed organist of York Minster. In 1756 he became Doctor of Music in Cambridge, and returned to the Chapel Royal as organist and composer, becoming Master of the Children in succession to Gates in 1757. He published treatises on singing, and on harpsichord and organ playing.
