| Township in Washington County, southern Rhode Island; population (1990) 15,000. Narragansett is located 43 km/27 mi south of Providence and 14 km/9 mi west-southwest of Newport, at the entrance of Narragansett Bay. Point Judith lies at its far southern end. |
| Settled in the mid-1600s, Narragansett was not made a town until 1901; it is named after the local Narragansett Indians. The town developed as a resort in the late 19th century. It now includes the summer resort of Narragansett Pier and the villages of Galilee and Jerusalem, as well as a state reservation that covers Scarborough Beach. Apart from tourism, fishing and agriculture are economically important. |
