narrative verse

Literary verse genre, which describes a poetical form that tells a story. The genre includes the verse forms: ballad, epic, lay, and saga.

Some of the earliest poems written in English, such as Beowulf (8th century), told stories. In the USA, the neo-narrative movement encouraged the rebirth of the narrative verse form from the late 1980s.
