Naryn

Oblast (region) in south central Kyrgyzstan; area 50,200 sq km/19,382 sq mi; population (1996) 259,000. The capital is Naryn. The region is mountainous, bordering on the south with the People's Republic of China. The principal river is the Naryn. Industry is mainly agricultural, with sheep and goat rearing, and spring barley and wheat cultivation the main economic activities. There is also limited gold mining. A traditional craft is the making of felt appliqué rugs (shyrdaks). The duban was formed in 1970, and it was known as Tian-Shan 1939–62.
