Nashik

Town in Maharashtra state, west-central India, lying 600 m/2,000 ft above sea level, 150 km/90 mi northeast of Mumbai (formerly Bombay); population (1991)722,100. It is a holy place for Hindus, being close to the source of the sacred Godavari River, and is visited by pilgrims every 12 years for the Kumbh Mela (a triennial bathing festival it shares with three other towns). It is a fast-growing city, with government printing and a distillery.
