NassauCapital and chief port of the Bahamas, on New Providence Island; population (2000) 210,800. With its fine beaches, tropical vegetation, and resort developments, it is one of the world's leading tourist spots, especially in winter. It was the site in 1994 of an international conference on biological diversity. A series of forts was built there – Fort Nassau (1697); Fort Charlotte (1787–94); Fort Fincastle (1793) – as protection against the dangers of Spanish invasion and of piracy.
