The Bahamian capital, Nassau, has many well-preserved colonial buildings. With fine beaches, warm weather, and many other attractions, the Bahamas are a very popular holiday destination and Nassau is an important port of call for cruise ships.

Capital and chief port of the Bahamas, on New Providence Island; population (2000) 210,800. With its fine beaches, tropical vegetation, and resort developments, it is one of the world's leading tourist spots, especially in winter. It was the site in 1994 of an international conference on biological diversity.

A series of forts was built there – Fort Nassau (1697); Fort Charlotte (1787–94); Fort Fincastle (1793) – as protection against the dangers of Spanish invasion and of piracy.

A tourist center, it is known for fine beaches and the resort community of Paradise Island across the harbour. The College of the Bahamas is here. English settlers founded it in the 17th century, and it was a supply base for Confederate blockade runners during the American Civil War.
