Nast, Thomas (1840–1902)

German-born US illustrator and cartoonist. During the American Civil War, Nast served as a staff artist for Harper's Weekly and later drew its editorial cartoons. His vivid caricatures helped bring down New York's Boss Tweed and established the donkey and the elephant as the symbols of Democrats and Republicans, respectively.

Nast came to the USA with his family in 1846. After attending the National Academy of Design in New York, he worked as an illustrator for several popular New York weeklies, eventually being sent to Europe as a foreign correspondent.
