Nasution, A H

    0.01 sec.

Nasution, A(bdul) H(aris) (1918–2000)

Indonesian army general. In 1959 he became Indonesia's minister of defence. After a failed kidnap and assassination attempt in September 1965 he led attacks against members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) in which nearly 300,000 were killed.

Nasution led guerrilla actions against the Dutch in Java during Indonesia's struggle for independence 1948–49. In March 1957 he convinced President Sukarno to declare martial law, ending parliamentary democracy in Indonesia. In December 1957 he ordered the army to take control of enterprises seized from the Dutch for their failure to negotiate a settlement over West Irian (now Irian Jaya), thereby consolidating political, military, administrative, and economic power in army hands.
