Nathan, Isaac

Nathan, Isaac (1792–1864)

English singer and composer. He studied Hebrew at Cambridge, being intended for a Jewish religious career, but turned to music. He studied in London with Domenico Corri, where he appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 1841 he went to Australia, settling at Sydney as a singing-master. Sir Charles Mackerras is a descendant.

Works

Sweethearts and Wives (1823), The Alcaid (1824), The Illustrious Stranger (1827), Merry Freaks in Troublous Times (composed 1843), Hebrew Melodies, and other songs to words by Byron.
