Natick

Town in Middlesex County, eastern Massachusetts, on Lake Cochituate, 24 km/15 mi southwest of Boston; population (1990 est) 30,500. The town is now a suburb of Boston, producing leather, paper, chemicals, processed foods, beer, baseballs (first developed here), preserves, and clothing. The US Army maintains a large research laboratory on Lake Cochituate.

Natick was founded in 1651 as a settlement for missionary John Eliot's Indian converts; reminders of its origins are present in a monument to Eliot and an Indian burial ground. Many American Indians were expelled in King Philip's War of 1675, and most had left by 1725 as white settlers moved in.

The town was badly affected by fires in 1872 and 1874. It has nine entries on the national register of historic places, including a parsonage and a diner. Attractions include the Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary – 267 ha/660 acres of marsh, pond, and meadows.
