National City

City in San Diego County, southwestern California; population (1990) 54,200. National City is situated on San Diego Bay 6 km/4 mi south of San Diego city centre.

Incorporated in 1887, National City was for a long time reliant on fruit packing, meat processing, and sawmilling. Its economy is now largely based on defence-related industries; the US Navy's largest base for surface vessels, the San Diego Naval Station, is located nearby, and the mothballed Pacific Reserve Fleet is anchored off the city. The National Steel and Shipbuilding Company and other maritime corporations are major employers in the city.
