National Consumer Council

UK public body set up by the government in 1975 to safeguard the interests of consumers and to take action on behalf of consumers. The NCC is largely funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), but the NCC is a non-departmental public body, so it has the interest of consumers, rather than the government, at its basis. There are separate councils in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland which deal with the particular concerns of consumers in those areas. The NCC funds the Consumers in Europe Group, an organization which represents the interests of UK consumers to European Union (EU) institutions.
