National Endowment for DemocracyUS political agency founded in 1983 with government backing. It has funded a range of political organizations abroad, with over 95% of its $114 million annual income coming from the US government after 1984. Recipients of funding include the Chilean Communist Party, Solidarity in Poland, the Social Christian Party in Costa Rica, and the anti-Sandinista election campaign in Nicaragua 1990. It has been criticized for financing political activities that would be illegal under US law, and for funding the pro-Noriega election campaign in Panama 1984 as well as the anti-Noriega campaign 1989. Its president is Carl Gershman. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |
