National Medal of Technology

Annual US prize awarded to the country's leading technological innovators. Established by Congress in 1980 and first awarded in 1985, it rewards individuals, teams, and companies for inventing, developing, and commercializing products and services, and for improving management techniques within the technological industries. Past winners include the cofounder of the Microsoft Corporation Bill Gates, the cofounder of Apple Computer Inc Steve Jobs, Robert W Taylor, who conceived the idea for ARPANET, from which the Internet evolved, and the companies Proctor and Gamble, DuPont, and 3M.
