National Physical Laboratory

Research establishment, set up in 1900 at Teddington, England, under the control of the Department of Industry. It is principally concerned with accurate measurement and calibration. In 1944 it began work on a digital computer, called the ACE (Automatic Computing Engine). One of the first ever built, it was completed in 1950. NPL was privatized in 1995.
