Nattier, Jean-Marc

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Nattier, Jean-Marc (1685–1766)

French painter. He painted history pictures and portraits, among them Louis XV's daughters, represented in the rococo fashion in various allegorical roles. He also worked for Peter the Great. Nattier was a follower of Charles Le Brun.

Nattier was born in Paris and studied under his father, the artist Jean Nattier (c. 1642–1705). He began his career engraving the Rubens Marie de' Medici panels in the Luxembourg Palace, Paris, with his father, and later became the painter of the court ladies and favourites of Louis XV. These paintings created a vogue for an allegorical portraiture showing society ladies as Greek goddesses. In 1717 he went to Amsterdam with the Russian ambassador of Peter the Great and was deeply impressed by Rembrandt's lighting effects, some of which he adopted for his own compositions.
