climate change

Change in the climate of an area or of the whole world over an appreciable period of time. A single winter that is colder than average does not indicate climate change; a change in average weather conditions from one period of time (for example, 30–50 years) to the next does indicate climate change. Climate fluctuations are natural phenomena, but there is increasing evidence to suggest that human industrial activity affects the global climate, particularly in terms of global warming.

While this year's September minimum extent was greater than each of the past two record-setting and near-record-setting low years, it is still significantly below the long-term average and well outside the range of natural climate variability, said NSIDC Research Scientist Walt Meier.
For scientists the answer is clear enough, as the examples mentioned are the result of natural climate variability, which does not contradict the human-induced long-term warming trend.
Providing evidence of natural climate variability is perhaps not as enticing as totally blaming wild weather on global warming, but when backed by solid science, such data can arm public agencies and others with valuable tools to allocate resources and priorities.
