Naugatuck

Borough and coterminous township in New Haven County, southwestern Connecticut; population (1990) 30,600. Naugatuck stands on the river of the same name, just south of Waterbury. It incorporates Union City and part of the Naugatuck State Forest.

The abundant water resources in the area around Naugatuck stimulated early industrial development. Charles Goodyear perfected the vulcanization process for rubber here in 1843. The borough's modern economy includes the manufacture of metals, plastics, chemicals, machinery, and instruments.
