Navarro, Juan

Navarro, Juan (c. 1530–1580)

Spanish composer. He was highly regarded as a polyphonist, and his church music was popular in Spain, Portugal, and Mexico for some time.

After the death of Cristóbal Morales in 1553 he competed unsuccessfully for the post of maestro di cappella at Málaga Cathedral, but he later obtained a similar post in Salamanca. He visited Rome in 1590, where his nephew Fernando Navarro Salazar arranged for the publication of some of his church music.
