nave

In architecture, the central area of a church extending from the entrance to the crossing, if any; otherwise, up to the altar. It was developed by the early Christian builders out of the Roman hall of justice. The central space became flanked by side aisles and the early flat timber roofs gave way to stone vaulting. It is the section of the building used by the laity.
