Nazimuddin, Khwaja

    0.03 sec.

Nazimuddin, Khwaja (1894–1964)

Second governor general of Pakistan 1948–51, successor to Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He resigned in 1951 in order to become prime minister after the assassination of Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan. His advocacy of the Urdu language, though he was himself a Bengali, and his pro-religious role in the anti-Ahmadi riots in 1952 forced his resignation in 1953.

He was previously an influential collaborator with Jinnah in the Muslim League, where he was minister of education 1929–34, home minister 1937–41, chief minister 1943–45 in the then Bengal government, and, after the creation of Pakistan, premier of East Bengal.
