Neale, John Ernest (1890–1975)

British historian, He was an authority on Elizabethan history and has had considerable influence on later scholars working in this field. His biography Queen Elizabeth was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize 1934.

Neale was born in Liverpool and educated at Liverpool University and University College London. In 1925 he was appointed professor of modern history at Manchester and was professor of English history at London 1927–56. He was knighted in 1955.

His later works include The Elizabethan Political Scene 1948, The Elizabethan House of Commons 1949, Elizabeth I and Her Parliaments 1559–81 1953; Essays in Elizabethan History 1958.
