The River Neckar, a tributary of the Rhine, passes through Heidelberg. The city is built on the banks of the river between ranges of wooded hills, and is home to the first university in Germany.

German river, a tributary of the Rhine; length 377 km/234 mi. From its source on the eastern slopes of the Black Forest, the Neckar winds northwest past Tübingen, Stuttgart, Heilbronn, and Heidelberg, to join the Rhine at Mannheim. It is navigable as far as Plochingen.
