Nederland

City in Jefferson County, southeastern Texas; population (1990) 16,200. Nederland is sited 16 km/10 mi southeast of Beaumont, near the Neches River.

Nederland was founded by Dutch immigrants in the late 19th century, and stands in a region that produces rice, dairy goods, and market garden produce. It expanded rapidly after the discovery of the nearby Spindletop oilfield in 1901. The city has a large refinery and is a railway transshipment point for oil. Tourism is also a mainstay of its economy.
