Nedim (1681–1730)

Turkish poet. One of the greatest lyric poets of the Ottoman Empire, Nedim wrote graceful ghazals and qasidas, excelling especially in the composition of songs.

Nedim was trained as a religious scholar and teacher, and became custodian of the library in Constantinople. His name, which means ‘close companion’, alludes to his friendship with Sultan Ahmed II.
