Needham

Town in Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts, situated on the Charles River, 19 km/12 mi southwest of Boston; population (2000 est) 29,000. Needham is a residential suburb of Boston, with high-tech industries, including electronic equipment and surgical instruments. It was incorporated in 1711.

The land was purchased in 1681. Originally agricultural, Needham developed a knitting industry, and later produced woollen and cotton goods, textiles, and paper products, but these traditional industries have declined.

The US artist N C Wyeth was born and lived in Needham. There are 14 entries on the national register of historic places.
