Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Neer, Aert van der (1603–1677)

Dutch landscape painter. He was the best of the Dutch painters of moonlit landscapes, which he developed from prototypes by Adam Elsheimer and Peter Paul Rubens. He also painted winter landscapes, usually skaters on ice.

His basic style of landscape painting is related to that of the Dutch painters Hendrik Avercamp and Esaias van de Velde. Two of his sons, Eglon van der Neer (1634–1703) and Jan van der Neer (1638–1665), were also painters.
