Negros

Island of the central Philippines, situated between the islands of Panay to the northwest and Cebu to the east; area 12,704 sq km/4,905 sq mi; population (2000) 3,700,000. Corn is the major crop, and timber is an important industry, together with cultivation of tiger prawns and manufacture of rattan furniture. Mineral wealth includes copper, gypsum, and salt. The coastal plains are densely populated; the main towns are Bacolod and Dumaguete.

It is divided into two provinces, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, separated by the central mountain range, roughly reflecting the linguistic division of the island. The deeply dissected mountain ridge runs the length of Negros (217 km/134 mi), and the active Kanlaon volcano is its highest peak at 2,450 m/8,038 ft.

Negros produces over 50% of the nation's sugar, relying on migrant labour from other islands.
