Neguib, Muhammad (1901–1984)

Egyptian army general and politician; prime minister from 1952 and president 1953–54. After a distinguished military career, he led the coup of the Free Officers that ended King Farouk's reign in 1952 and abolished the monarchical system in 1953. Prime minister and then president of the newly emerged republic, he was deposed and succeeded by Gamal Abdel Nasser and retired to Cairo.

Neguib was born in Khartoum and educated at Gordon College, Khartoum, the Military Academy, Cairo, and Cairo University.
