Nysa

Industrial town (machinery, food processing) in Opole province, southern Poland, on the River Nysa, 48 km/30 mi southwest of Opole; population (2001 est) 48,300. It was capital of a principality of the bishops of Breslau (now Wrocław) 1198–1810, and part of German Upper Silesia until 1945.

More than half of Nysa was destroyed in World War II. The rebuilt town became an industrial centre. Many of the old historic buildings have been restored.

The Nysa Łuzycka (German Lausitzer Neisse) rises near Liberec in the northern Czech Republic and flows 225 km/140 mi northwards along the German–Polish frontier to join the southeast of Frankfurt an der . The Nysa Kłodzka (German Glatzer Neisse) rises in the Sudeten Mountains on the Czech–Polish frontier and flows 193 km/120 mi northeast to join the above Brieg, northwest of Opole.

The Nysa Łuzycka and Oder rivers have marked the border between Germany (formerly East Germany) and Poland since 1946.
