Nelson, John

Nelson, John (1941– )

US conductor. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music, New York. In 1972 he led concert performances of Les Troyens in New York, where he also conducted the Metropolitan Opera House premiere of the opera in 1973. Other Metropolitan Opera performances include Cavalleria rusticana, I pagliacci, and Jenůfa. From 1972 he conducted Carmen and Poppea for the New York City Opera. He has been music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra 1977–88, and the Opera Theatre of St Louis 1985–92. He conducted Benvenuto Cellini for Lyon Opera in 1989, and Béatrice et Bénédict for Welsh National Opera in 1993.
