Nelson Mass

The name given to Haydn's Mass in D minor, composed in 1798. The fanfares in the Benedictus are said to commemorate Nelson's victory in the battle of the Nile, but Haydn cannot have heard the news of the battle until after the Mass was finished. His own title was Missa in angustiis. It was first performed in Eisenstadt on 23 September 1798.
