Nemirovich-Danchenko, Vladimir Ivanovich (1859–1943)

Russian theatre director and manager. He founded and directed the Moscow Art Theatre with Konstantin Stanislavsky from 1898. He was also the founder of the Moscow Musical Studio, where the methods of the Moscow Art Theatre were applied to opera and operetta.

Nemirovich-Danchenko began his career as a successful novelist and writer of light comedies. He took charge of the drama course of the Moscow Philharmonic Society in 1891 and introduced more disciplined and naturalistic acting techniques into the Moscow theatre. He met Stanislavsky in 1897 and the Moscow Art Theatre was created the following year, using some of Nemirovich-Danchenko's pupils as members of the company.
